Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Human trafficking remains one of the most serious and pervasive violations of human rights, and it continues to be a major concern in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Zuru, Kebbi State. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, have gained prominence as tools for advocacy, awareness, and action against human trafficking. These platforms allow individuals and organizations to disseminate information about trafficking dangers, share success stories, and coordinate efforts to rescue victims. According to Abubakar et al. (2024), social media campaigns have played a key role in raising awareness and mobilizing communities to take action against human trafficking. In Zuru, where human trafficking is prevalent, social media has been used to raise public awareness, support law enforcement efforts, and provide information to potential victims and the public. This study explores the use of social media in curbing human trafficking in Zuru, examining how digital tools are being used to combat this crime and the impact they have on the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has shown promise in combating human trafficking globally, there is little research on how these platforms are specifically being used in Zuru, Kebbi State. Despite the growing use of digital media for advocacy, human trafficking remains a persistent issue in the region, with limited structured efforts to harness social media for this cause. This study seeks to explore how social media is being used to prevent human trafficking in Zuru and assess the effectiveness of these efforts.
